Letter to David R. (ODB)

Dear David,

I appreciate your article, "Beautiful Scars" in the Our Daily Bread daily devotional on April 18.

Many Christians think that others are saved by their witness (how good they are) based on Christ's saying, "let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven (Mt 5.16, KJV)."

If you will notice, there is a comma between works and "and glorify" that completely changes the meaning we have given the verse. Properly interpreted it means that we are to glorify our Father in heaven by letting our lights shine, not that when others see our light shine that they will glorify God (or be saved).

Christ's testimony (the gospel) on our lips saves another when they believe on Him, not our testimony (1 Cor 1.21&Eph 6.19). The Good News Card

Love,
