OUR DUTY

"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man (Eccl 12.13)."

The New Testament makes it clear what the greatest commandments are: "Jesus said to him, THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL THY MIND. This is the first and great commandment. And the the second is like unto it, THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Mt 22.37-40)."

To keep the great commandments above we can start by observing Christ's command to preach the gospel (Mk 16.15). In so doing we love Christ for he says "If you love me keep my commandments (Jn 14.15)." "He that has my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me (Jn 14.21a)." By preaching the gospel to another we also keep the second great command of God to love our neighbor as ourself. What greater thing can we do for our neighbor than to preach the gospel to them? This allows them to believe on Christ and be saved (Jn 6.47 & Acts), "For it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching (the gospel) to save them that believe (1 Cor 1.21b & Mk 16.15)."

It is our duty to preach the gospel for in so doing we keep God's commandments: But to preach the gospel we must first know what the gospel is. The gospel is clearly defined in the New Testament. The Apostle Paul wrote, "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you... For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures: And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 Cor 15.1b & 3-4)." This can easily be preached to another by asking them if they have heard the good news (Gospel means good news.) and telling them - "Christ died for our sins, he was buried, and he rose the third day (1 Cor 15.3-4 abbreviated)."

Now that we know what the gospel is and how to preach it we can fear God and keep his commandments: For this is our whole duty (Eccl 12.13 & Mk 16.15)
