THE SPORTS GOD

“You shall have no other God before me (Exodus 20.1-4).”

The other day I was watching the news about severe flooding in Colorado. The day before I was channel surfing and saw Denver's Mile High Stadium full of people (maybe 100,000) worshiping the pigskin.

The number one religion in the U.S. is sports. Its main denominations are Football, Basketball, and Baseball. Do you suppose this makes God angry enough to send a flood? After all, he is a jealous God (Ex 20.2).

People spend their waking hours talking about their team or the prospects of winning, or a particular sports figure. They eat, drink and sleep sports. Harmless you say? Not when we forget the one who created us for Himself (Col 1.16 & 2 Cor 5.15). The sports worshipers are more religious than I, worshiping the pigskin (football), cowhide (baseball), and rubber (basketball) gods

We can and should live for the one who created us for Himself by preaching the gospel (Mk 16.15) so that others can be born of God (1 Jn 5.1), and teaching them that believe to preach the gospel as well (Mt 28.20). This is what really matters (See Eccl 12.13 & Gal 6.15-16), not sports.

To preach the gospel simply ask another if they have heard the good news (Gospel means good news.) and tell them - "Christ died for our sins, he was buried, and he rose the third day (1 Cor 15.3-4)."

This is the same gospel the Apostle Paul received and preached and we get the same results as he did when we preach it to others (I Cor 4.15b).

Remember, God is a jealous God. Let's not provoke Him to jealousy by worshiping the sports god. Instead let's do his will by preaching the gospel.
