Before we can save others by obeying Christ's command to preach it (Mk 16.15) we must know what the gospel is (Please see SAVED! on www.preach-the-gospel.org for a definition of saved.).
Everybody has a different idea of what the gospel is. Some say it is the whole bible (Genesis to Revelation) while others think it is the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Others believe it is how they live their lives (their witness) the tells the story (St. Francis of Assisi said, "Preach the gospel to every creature, if necessary use words."). Others think it is by telling others what Christ has done in their lives (our testimony) that saves another. Last but not least: Evangelicals think the gospel is their "plan of salvation" (See PLAN OF SALVATION on www.preach-the-gospel.org.)
Let's dissolve the mystery. The Apostle Paul clearly defines the gospel in his first letter to the Corinthian believers - "Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also you have received, and wherein you stand; by which also you are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached to you, unless you have believed in vain (not believed in the first place). I delivered to you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures (1 Cor 15.1-4).
While the apostle Paul was jailed for preaching the gospel some were preaching the gospel supposing to add affliction to his bonds, unsincerely, His response was, "Whether in pretense or truth, Christ is preached and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice (Phil 1.15-18)." When the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas what he must do to be saved their answer was, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, and your house (Acts 16.30-31)." "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believes (Rom 1.16)."
The instant a person believes on Christ after being told the good news (gospel) they are born of God (Jn 3.36 & 6.47 and 1 Jn 5.1). "I have begotten you through the gospel (1 Cor 4.15b)." wrote Paul. To save others we must preach the gospel to them (Rom 10.14)!
Daily ask others if they have heard the good news or exclaim "Good News" and tell them - "Christ died for our sins, he was buried, and he rose the third day." This is how we save others.
